200th Post

Wow, 200th post, who saw that one coming?  I guess I did when I posted the last entry and wordpress said I was at 199.  I recently accepted a job at the University of Arizona, and am excited to be moving back to the desert.  One of my goals in the upcoming semester is to retool and refocus this blog.  I have been dropping posts for the past year, and am excited to look at what I can do to take this blog to the next level.  So here I am in the next three weeks I am moving across the country, it’s probably one of the busiest times of the year, and I am making the committment to get back on the blog.  We are in the middle of the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival, I’m finishing up my teaching tenure at  DSI, and looking at what is next for me in the realm of improv, and I think in any moment, I need this blog the most.  I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you!

The Challenge

Over the past year I have been writing away on this blog, and I have really enjoyed it!  It has been interesting to push myself through several writing challenges including taking a month to write every single day.  While I have been off the wagon in writing the past couple months, this year long experiment in writing has been a good one.  But it might be about time to try something new, and go back to the writing drawing board.

Over the month of December I instituted a new challenge for myself.  I plan to write three short stories based on a predetermined topic.  I have a longer based idea that I want to write, but I think I need to take a bit more time to work on my writing style and process.  So I thought the best way to start it off would be to break it down and work on writing in a smaller scale.

So wish me luck as I walk into this new realm of writing.  My hope is to keep up with the blog, and to keep publishing away, but it might again be a little longer between posts.  So it’s off to short story writing, and as I move forward and work on this task I hope to provide some updates on the creative process side of it all.  Maybe at the end of the month the finished product will be posted here!

Blog Break

I am going to be taking a week off to get a good start on another writing project!  I will also be traveling up to Pennsylvania this weekend to run in a half marathon with the family!  Look forward to getting back into the game after a week off!

The CNN Countdown Clock from embracethechaos.com

I have been totally glued to the coverage of Hurricane Irene because one I am a weather freak, and I am so nerdily interested.  Secondly I really enjoy coverage of major current events, while this coverage is usually not for a good purpose, I love when the news focuses on one thing, and as a nation we are all glued to what is happening.  While this was something I always enjoyed, during this coverage, for the first time, I was turned off.  I am nervous of living in a world where everything has a countdown and everything is on a catastrophic path to destruction.

This growth of the countdown has been such a dramatic and growing phenomenon.  Countdown to the Debt Crisis, Countdown to the end of space travel, countdown the overthrow of the government in Libya, and countdown until President Obama and his family gets ice cream.  While this might make for good ratings and dramatic television, I do not think this puts our world in a better place.  While CNN is winning with exciting television, our world is becoming more of a divided place.

Almost everyone can agree our politicians are the most divided in history.  Washington did not magically become this way, it is in a direct result of 24 hour news cycles and dramatic countdown television.  Back in the day our politicians would go to Washington and a news cycle would keep us up to date on what was going on, but their day to day work was not magnified.  Now anything a politician does can be on CNN within minutes.  This has lead to hypersensitivity to every little thing and stance a politician takes, and then each movement can be used as a way to grandstand.  In my humble opinion, expanding the debt ceiling should not have been such a big issue, we simply raised the debt ceiling numerous times before with no issues, but this time our divided parties got to grand stand and choose dramatic sides.  Did this help the country move forward in a positive way, in my opinion no, our credit got downgraded, we did not come up with a solid plan to eliminate the debt, and people are more divided than ever.

In the world of improv the grounding philosophy is yes and, working together, and positivity.  Through that method we create amazing worlds, add interesting and exciting details, and quickly solve the problems our characters are experiencing.  This is something that apparently used to happen in our nation’s capital.  There would be a problem or issue, people would get together talk about the different approaches, and then people would compromise and come up with a pretty solid solution.  A win win scenario, but now that does not happen.  People refuse to work together, we get crap deals, and the first discussion is about who won, and who is now in a better place to win the next election.

I do not want a divided government.  Most of my viewpoints span the political spectrum, some things I side with the Republicans, some things I side with the Democrats.  What I want them to do is come up with solutions, not force everything to be a dramatic game of who can win.  Not everything we do should be a countdown, while I want politicians to feel the pressure of coming up with solutions, when CNN is rocking a countdown, I don’t think anyone is happy with the solution. Sadly, these decisions give Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper a bit more things to talk about.  How can we take a page out of the improv handbook, calm down the dramatics, work together, and come up with solutions to the major problems we are facing.

Blog Break

I am coming up, and already in the busiest time of the year in my position.  I also have some added challenges because my buildings are currently under construction which is preventing all of the preproduction that goes into getting residence halls ready for students to move into.  With that being said, I plan to be away from Justimprov until the week of August 15th!  I have some interesting posts brewing, and am excited to write them, I just want to be able to put the proper amount of work into them!  So see you in a few weeks, and enjoy the rest of your summer!

I will be spending the next couple days on a retreat for work!  I probably won’t post again until after the weekend!  I have a list of ideas for blogs, that I am really excited to work on, so stay tuned.  Have a great rest of your week, and hopefully you are staying cool!

At The Beach

I hope you all are having a great week!  I have been enjoying the good life on vacation the past couple days, and will not be posting until Wednesday!  Until we meet again, I hope you are having a positive week!

As of this posting, I am on my way to Macomb, Illinois with 7 students from UNC.  I will be attending the NACURH conference which is a leadership conference for student leaders in college and university residence halls!  I am excited to spend the weekend with positive and enthusiastic student leaders.  I am also really excited to be presenting a leadership program based off of the theories of improv!  I probably won’t post till I return to North Carolina on Monday, so enjoy your weekend!

April Focus

It has been interesting to watch my blogging patterns emerge over the past couple months of Justimprov!  I seem to have developed into a pattern of monthly goals.  In February it was my goal to post every single day, as Seth Goodin would say, we need to learn to ship, so impose deadlines and deliver.  In March I focused on the Choices theory, the Wednesday Work Outs, and getting into the rhythm of the weekly features coupled with longer blogs on direct topics.  For April I want to get back to the basics, lets talk about improv.  I have seen myself slowly drift away from my original focus of connecting improv to real life.  So my goal for the month is to really dive into the things I am doing in improv, improv books, and improv theories and connect them to other the everyday.  So I promise to have at least two weekly posts directly related to the fun art of improv!  I hope you enjoy!  Yes And!
